"Saalbach is an attractive traditional village, which is home to many rustic chalet buildings and a pretty historic church. The village has an affluent feel and features a charming pedestrianised centre which has many shops and restaurants. The resort is surrounded by over 200km of marked pistes and 55 modern lifts, making it a popular Alpine ski destination." - Chloe Hickman
Saalbach is a cute village, centred around the onion domed church in the heart of the resort. The buildings are traditional style, although many of them are actually modern. Saalbach is lively, with a fantastic atmosphere and a charming pedestrianised centre that boasts a superb range of shops, bars and restaurants.
With largely sunny slopes, Saalbach is an exceedingly pleasant place to spend time. Neighbouring Hinterglemm has a slightly more anonymous centre, but is home to lively apres ski along the main street. Saalbach has some of the best apres ski in Austria, with over 60 restaurants in town, and 38 bars in which to dance in your ski boots until the early hours.
Hinterglemm, meanwhile, is an excellent resort for families, and with a ski area that boasts over 200km of slopes, this is a great choice for buyers interested in owning a ski property in Austria. Both villages are located 90 minutes from Salzburg and 2 hours from Innsbruck.
With 270km of slopes, Saalbach-Hinterglemm is the perfect intermediate ski area. The area is largely wide slopes nestled between forests, which makes it an excellent low visibility ski area. With 140km of blue runs and 112km of red runs, the area is perfect for beginner and intermediate skiers, while the range of mountain huts and fast, well groomed slopes are ideal for casual skiers.
The full Saalbach-Hinterglemm circuit can be skied anti-clockwise, with less confident skiers able to stick to blue runs all the way. One of the largest ski areas in Austria, there is plenty of skiing in the local area. On the south-facing side of the valley, there are five sectors, and with fast new lifts connecting each one it is easy to get from one to the other.
While the area can get busy during high season, the wide, groomed slopes can take a high number of people without feeling overcrowded. The Nightpark above Hinterglemm is served by its own heated gondola and is floodlit most evenings, while experts will enjoy the world cup downhill run.
As with many Alpine destinations, Saalbach-Hinterglemm is a superb hiking and biking destination, with around 400km of hiking and hill walking paths, and 400km of mountain biking trails. There are 5 lifts working throughout the summer months, making downhill mountain biking accessible for everyone, with trails ranging from simple tracks to more challenging routes.
Located 20 minutes from Zell am See, in a popular golfing region, Saalbach is a great place to unwind if the action holiday activities aren't your cup of tea. The Tauern Spa is the second largest in Austria, and has plenty to recommend it to adults and children alike, with children's pools, relaxation pools, brine pools and saunas.
Local attractions like the Kapt'n Hook Adventure Pool are popular amongst kids, while the Mega Flying Fox sends you 2.5km on a zip wire, reaching speeds of up to 80km/h, and it's an absolute adrenaline rush. Elsewhere, you can take advantage of the forests in the area with treetop walks, high rope courses and adventure playgrounds.
Properties for sale in Saalbach-Hinterglemm are largely new build apartments. There are several well situated properties in a ski in, ski out position, along with a few in less convenient locations. Most of the new developments are in Saalbach rather than Hinterglemm, which is the cuter of the two resorts. The rental prospects of apartments in this resort are good, so buying this as an investment is a real option.
